Tough Lives

I went for a radio ad production today. While waiting for the voicing artist to come, I was just sitting in the reception area with my creative guy lazily sipping a yummy cup of tea while being engaged in conversation with him.

An old guy came, about 65 or so years in age and sat next to me. When he met whoever he came to meet, I heard the conversation they had. Old uncle was a broker of sorts. He had come with a deal and was discussing it.

He was drenched in sweat, very polite and spoke well. He didn’t seem to be the greedy terrible type of broker that you generally tend to come across. Then again, we can never judge a book by its cover so I’m just saying what I feel.

Somehow something about him just broke whatever was left of my heart. I mean, at his age he still has to work so hard to earn a living. He’s the sort where when you look at him, you can say he’s genuine and has it tough.

I just wish the world was different.

I also hate being so soft and so emotional. I hate this… It brings my world down when I see things like this and makes me feel jaded and helpless.

Then it made me remember stories that my parents used to tell me about their childhood and growing years. How tough it was for them. I know my dad had it really tough coz he came from a family of 5 kids and his dad died when he was schooling if I’m not mistaken. He was the 3rd child of the family and his mother had to support 6 people including herself with her salary.

But out of 5 kids, only 2 are well educated. The eldest and my dad. It was 4 boys and 1 girl. Listening to what they had to go through to get to where they are/were now is an amazing story. Makes us realize how lucky we’re and how thankful we really need to be. My dad did have a way of teaching my bro and me about valuing things in life. The fact that nothing comes easy and we didn’t have it that easy either coz we were taught that way. We always had to work hard to get what we want and my dad had a way of teaching and getting us used to it from our younger days, which I hated at that time and now am thankful for the lessons learnt.

My dad's dad was a school principal and his kids were monsters when they were young. Just listening to the punishments they got as kids are so frightening that one can get goosebumps and have traumatizing thoughts running in the head.

My mum didn’t really have it that easy either. But when comparing the two, my dad’s life has been the more difficult one.

So yes, we all have a story to tell. Some nice, some not so. Many lessons are learnt and life goes on.

I need to get out of this mood!

  4. i totally get what you're feeling. and understand the mind frame which makes you feel that way... i sometimes feel we're all lame to be so obsessed with being shallow and materialistic...we can't seem to find an alternate method to measure our lives ...we totally forget how for some people...all they want is to eat and pay the bills. i was being stupid and feeling sorry for my self a few minutes ago, so glad i checked in with you today...you just reminded me that my life is not as crappy as I like to think it is...and that life is not as bad as my self loathing self makes me feel. so i shall shake it off.... something my dad always tells me is...failures are the pillars of success..... remembering that always makes me pull my socks up ! your anon friend ( i need to get a blog profile soon..this 'anon' thing has got to stop :) ....

  6. more and more people are working late into their 60s and 70s as they can't afford to retire. It is different if you have a choice and do it to keep active but it is indeed sad if you do it because you have not choice. Sometimes it is bad decisions made in their youth, sometimes it is medical expenses, at other times it is just their generosity.
One thing is for certain we should learn a lesson from remember that we need to look out for ourselves as we get older..

  7. Yeah, sometimes we don't realise how easy we have it... I remember my mum telling how they used to have plain tea and bananas from the tree in the garden for lunch because money was so tight.

But you know, that's the way the cookie crumbles and these stories are about incredible resilience and overcoming odds...

Hope you have a great weekend!

  8. There's this security guard who works at my office who's suffering from a kidney failure..Even though us locals are blessed with natural resources like water, for some it could have long lasting effects when its hard water (kivul, or water with high mineral content) that they consume on a daily basis.

So this person has a tube running out from inside his kidneys to urinate because his organs aren't functioning properly. Unlike most of us who have the luxury to afford a CT Scan at Durdans or Central Hospital, this guy can only be on the waiting list at the General Hospital.

Anyhow his commitment to live and support his family gives me so much inspiration. මහත්තයා මටත් ඉන්නේ දුවෙක් (Sir, I have a daughter) says my friend. He further tells me that his plan is to work after hours in a three wheeler so that he could earn a bit extra for his child's education.

With the support of many of us at office, his life goes on like any of ours..but his commitment & will to live, lightens me up every time that I see him.

Life's tough..you've gotta experience it or see it from another person's life..then you'd feel that it's worthwhile as in my case.

  10. systemoad - wow... it's so nice of you guys to help him out.. made me feel sad.. you never really know what another person's life is like until you walk in their shoes or hear it and see it.. I really hope he'll be ok.. I know a few people who do many things to earn a little extra for the kids... just so they can do better in life. Their determination and hard work is indeed inspirational and amazing. Thanks for sharing this.
